I don't know if you noticed, but I haven't been posting much lately.

Can I be honest with you?

It's not been because I've been off doing super fun summer stuff. It's because my mental health has been crap.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Talking about mental health is uncomfortable, but we all experience it. So not talking about it doesn't help anyone.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As someone who lives with anxiety and is highly sensitive, I find summer difficult.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There are a lot of people out and about, more noise and sensory stimulation than usual, less routine and structure... And for me, it takes a great deal of energy to manage that.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So I find myself with not much left for social media. And thus, I took a break.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So today, I just want you to know... It's okay to take a break.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
From social media, from work, from social events, from ANYTHING that requires too much of you.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
No guilt. Take the break. Listen to your mind and your body. Rest. Be well.

It's officially been 4 years since my comprehensive product photography course, Snap, Sell, Succeed, open its doors for the very first time.

Four years, several updates (including a full revamp released just last month), and 650 students later, and I could not be more proud of the course I created and my students who have become such amazing examples of what's possible with great photos.

For 4 years, I've opened and closed the doors to SSS two or three times a years. Those "launches" can be a lot of fun, but A) they're exhausting and B) I've stopped feeling good about it.

When I think about the mission statement for my soul, it's to make a positive impact for creatives in business as much and as often as I can - so that they can have a sustainable, profitable business with their creativity.

So, effective immediately, the doors to SSS have been flung wide open and they will remain that way.

Horrified. Disgusted. Enraged.

All things I continue to feel as more and more bodies of Indigenous children are discovered in unmarked graves at the sites of former residential schools across Canada.

Over 1000 children (at least) were killed and dropped in a hole in the ground like they were nothing. This was done by the Catholic church while the Canadian government turned a blind eye.

No one responsible has atoned for or acknowledged these crimes. And it absolutely disgusts and enrages me.

Systematic racism against Indigenous peoples is pervasive still today, and I AM FURIOUS.

In my previous career, I had the honour of working with the Indigenous community. They are beautiful, vibrant, and welcoming communities (despite their understandable wariness and even after all that has been done to them). They have fought to regain their culture after colonizers tried to strip it from them. They will share their beautiful culture and customs with us if we are respectful and it's really a gift to be in the presence of it.

We (settlers) NEED to stand in solidarity with Indigenous peoples. Demand that reconciliation move forward. Demand the Catholic church be held accountable. Then, and only then, can we start to heal as a country.

I'll be sharing some resources in my stories. Please, if you're Canadian (or a supporter), look at them. We MUST do something, long after this is not in the media spotlight anymore. It's up to us to see this through.

I'm just an Earth-loving child of the forest, who loves her creative craft of photography and has the ability to share it with others - so that they can learn & love photography too.

And so that they can utilize photography to help them grow their own beautifully creative business.
